MIZUNARA ~ Birth of a Perfume
Launched in 2018 by the fragrance brand PARFUM SATORI, this perfume draws inspiration from Japan’s indigenous Mizunara oak tree and the rich aromas of Japanese whisky aged in its wood.
It started out as a “handsome” unisex scent with a calm and mature scent that was initially perceived as masculine. Over time, however, it gradually gained popularity with women as well. Today, it is beloved by a wide range of people.
What is the Mizunara Tree?
Mizunara (Scientific Name： Quercus crispula Blume), also known as Japanese oak, is a deciduous tree that forms beech forests in Japan. Some specimens live for over 1,000 years. The wood is extremely hard and heavy and is used in construction and furniture. In forests, Mizunara trees also nurture mushrooms such as maitake, pointing to the generosity of the tree.
Inspiration Behind the Perfume
The journey of this fragrance began with a discovery of the authentic bar MIZUNARA CASK, located near PARFUM SATORI’s atelier in Roppongi.
The woody aroma permeating the shop, the counter made from a 500-year-old Mizunara tree, and the distinctive scent of whisky aged in Mizunara casks became the spark for creating a new perfume.
While experimenting with ingredients such as balsam, castoreum, and amber, Satori Osawa gravitated between her atelier and the bar, giving birth to the unique “Malt Core Base.”
Heart of the Perfume: Creating the Malt Core Base
The “Malt Core Base” is at the very heart of this fragrance and reflects the process of whisky aging.
The Malt Core Base is built on a foundation of toasted, smoky dryness, intricately intertwined with the sweetness of resins with an animalic leather feel. The woody notes of agarwood (kyara) and sandalwood enhance this complexity, giving the scent profound depth. The base incorporates smoky tobacco-like isobutyl quinoline, rich sweet tolu balsam, finished with a metallic amber that adds a modern edge. Furthermore, the burning sensation of whisky on the tongue, is recreated using cognac oil.
Journey to the Scent’s Source：Mizunara Forest on Mt. Akagi
Field research was conducted in the Mizunara forest around Konuma, a small lake on Mt. Akagi, in Gunma Prefecture.
This location had a major influence on the fragrance profile of MIZUNARA. The fresh green virgin forest surrounding the lake directly inspired the top notes.
Sunlight sparkles on the rippling surface of the lake and reflects off the leaves. In the distance, the water appears to be a deep blue-grey, from which you can sense the powerful sprit of the Mizunara trees.
The inspiration drawn from this natural scene merged with the already-complete Malt Core Base, adding a strong, lasting impression to the final notes of the perfume.
Fragrance Portrait：MIZUNARA
MIZUNARA opens with a refreshing galbanum green and herbal accord. Woody notes that evoke the warmth of trees soon follow, gradually giving way to the dry, smoky character of malt and toasted aromas. In the finale, agarwood and sandalwood add depth, while a firm amber pulls the entire composition together with strength.
This refined fragrance is perfect for business and formal occasions. It also shines through at evening dates and parties. Men are recommended to apply it close to the waist or heart area, while women can achieve a particularly delicate dry-amber by applying it to their inner thighs or other warmer areas of the skin.
The scent rises slowly through the body, accentuating the contours from the jaw to the neck and creating a strikingly beautiful impression.
From Trial and Error with Mizunara Casks to the Birth of Japanese Whisky
Because of its extreme hardness and qualities that make it difficult to process, Mizunara wood was originally not considered suitable for whisky barrels. However, resource shortages during World War II led to its re-evaluation. With overseas oak supplies cut off, Mizunara was adopted as a substitute. During this period, craftsmen deepened their understanding of the wood’s properties and refined the techniques needed to make suitable barrels.
Whisky aged in Mizunara casks became known for its distinctive kyara (agarwood) and sandalwood aromas, helping Japanese whisky establish its own unique identity. The use of Mizunara barrels was one of the key factors that elevated Japan to become one of the world’s top malt-producing nations. Today, Mizunara-aged whiskies are highly regarded worldwide for their rich aroma and flavor.
Through this historical background, Mizunara whisky has become more than a drink. It is a symbol of Japanese creativity and adaptability, a testament to craftsmanship that overcame aversity and earned global recognition for its unique beauty.
The perfume MIZUNARA is also inspired by the characteristics, history, and distinctive aromas of Japanese whisky aged in Mizunara casks. Through its shared rich scent, it pays homage to the spirit of that craftsmanship.
